The co-operative movement started in 1904. The eminent social and political leaders in India back then were convinced that this was very critical for the economic development of the country. This was important for rural people. The present bank, called the Vidyasagar Central Co-operative bank Ltd. started when three rural banks merged. There were only six branches, including the head office in the 7th decade of the last century. In 1971 Sri Barendra Nath Patra from Patashpur became the elected vice- chairman of the bank. At that time, the deposit in the bank had 2.70 crores deposited wealth and 2.50 crore of loan. The chairman back then late. Bishnu Babu and the newly elected vice-chairman adopted panning to grow the business of the bank. Within the next few years, the bank had 28 branches, and it had opened its branches at different blocks. The business increased as well as the members of the society got benefited. The hon'ble former Chief Minister of the state, Sri Buddhadev Bhattacharyya inaugurated the computer service for the people at the Midnapore branch on 4th of May 2002.
